From Kerry to Hillary

I have a gut feeling that if Hillary is the Democratic nominee, Wesley Clark is going to be running with her. Take that, war hero McCain! Wesley seems to have come out of a long hibernation at this exact point in time. Coincidence?

The best part is there's probably free wine

The theme of BECA gallery’s second international exhibition, opening April 5, 2008, is ‘Mirror for the 21st Century’ curated and juried by Helen Pheby, PhD, Deputy Curator, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, England. Helen writes, "The works in the exhibition illustrate various and diverse aspects of life in the twenty-first century. From cultural references that position the maker’s place in history, such as space flight and genetic research, through the use of media available only by recent technological developments, to a specific but momentary fingerprint in time, the exhibition reflects our contemporary age; its concerns; its hopes and, above all, its beauty." ‘Mirror for the 21st Century’ will run from April 5 – May 23, 2008 with an opening artist reception on April 5th from 6-9pm.

The gallery is pleased to announce that the following artists have been selected for this international group exhibition:

Sara Andersdotter (London, UK), Yep, it's me (Louisiana, USA), Deborah Brooks (Washington, DC, USA), Susan Cutts (West Sussex, UK), Odette England (London, UK), Rosanne Erskine (Scotland, UK), Tracey Featherstone and Krista Connerly (Ohio, USA), Elana Katz and Philip Metz (New York, USA and Stuttgart, Germany), John Kesling (Georgia, USA), Tim Maslen and Jennifer Mehra (London, UK), Elly Prestegaard (Nyborg, Norway), Marilyn Rathbone (West Sussex, UK), Shana Robbins (Georgia, USA), Cynthia Scott (Louisiana, USA), Minka Stoyanova (Louisiana, USA), Donna Wan (California, USA), Beatrice Ward (Massachusetts, USA), Luba Zygarewicz (Louisiana, USA).

(It is of note that Helen Pheby had no knowledge of the artists names nor which cities or states within the US or countries outside of the US they were submitting from.)

BECA Gallery is at 527 St. Joseph Street, right across from the CAC.

Betsy McGovern at City Park this Thursday

With my visit to Whole Foods Uptown yesterday afternoon, I filled out a questionnaire on City Park, decided that, yes, that was John Goodman checking out two aisles over from me, and picked up a new Gambit, which told me that Betsy is playing Thursday night at 6 PM at the Botanical Garden. Hopefully, I can convince my new employer that I should leave early to attend! Last time she played there, it was a rousing good time!

OK...I'm pretty proud of this

I spent Saturday afternoon making this cake for my friend, Michelle's, birthday. This is from the Barefoot Contessa's Beatty's Chocolate Cake recipe, and as usual for her recipes, it was fabulous! Freed Ex-Governor of Alabama Talks of Abuse of Power

Point made! Hallelujah!

http://www.democracynow.org/2008/3/28/headlines#7

Ex-Alabama Gov. to be Freed on Bond
In Alabama, former Governor Don Siegelman has been ordered released from jail while he appeals a conviction on corruption charges. Siegelman is currently serving a seven-year, four-month prison sentence on charges of bribery, conspiracy and mail fraud. Critics say he is the target of a political witch hunt. More than fifty former state attorney generals have called for a congressional investigation into Siegelman’s case. The release was ordered just hours after the House Judiciary Committee said it would call Siegelman to testify over whether his prosecution was politically motivated.

This is what it's like not to have insurance

When I went to the doctor this morning, the "bill enforcer" called me into her office to talk to me about my bill. She said that my bill is $1300 now. It didn't seem that there was any notation in the computer that I had called and talked to them about this. I've told the hospital something like 3 times that Blue Cross rejected every one of my bills because the hospital didn't submit them under my whole name, but just put the last part (see post on hyphenated names, February 1st), and now they want me to pay them $1300! I told them that Blue Cross just sent them a payment and that when I get my tax refund, I will pay them the balance that Blue Cross didn't pay.

It sure was demoralizing to get intercepted by a collector when you think you're doing things the way you're supposed to. Now I think I know what it's like to be without insurance. Why would you go somewhere where you'll be treated like that? When are we going to get some sense in this country, get rid of the insurance companies, and fund national health care?! It's getting to the point, anyway, that insurance companies are going to try to keep you from getting good care when you're really sick, so what is the point?

Good thing I don't have to buy film anymore

Dalai Lama Threatens Resignation as Chinese Crackdown Continues
In Tibet, the Chinese government is claiming more than one hundred people have surrendered in the protests against Chinese rule. Tibetans faced a deadline of midnight Monday to turn themselves in. The protests erupted last week when Buddhist monks took to the streets of Lhasa to mark the anniversary of the 1959 uprising against Chinese rule. Human rights groups say dozens of people have been killed and hundreds arrested in the Chinese crackdown. On Tuesday, the Dalai Lama said he would he step down as Tibet’s political leader if the violence continues.

The Dalai Lama: “As early as 1987, again in this very room, the British journalist Jonathan Mirsky—I interviewed here. And he asked me, ‘If these things become out of control, violence, tell what you do.’ Then I [inaudible] immediately I told (him) if things become out of control, then my only option is completely resign, completely resign.”

The protests have reportedly spread to ethnic Tibetan communities outside of Tibet.

Words to live by

On the one hand we are called to play the good Samaritan on life's roadside; but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see what the whole Jericho road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life's highway. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.

Someone from Planet Earth finally got through to Bush

I'm glad Dubya is finally admitting that the economy is tanking, although not acknowledging that it's entirely of his own making. Kind of like his speech in Jackson Square where he didn't really acknowledge the federal government's shamefully slow response, but said:

"When communities are rebuilt, they must be even better and stronger than before the storm. Within the Gulf region are some of the most beautiful and historic places in America. As all of us saw on television, there's also some deep, persistent poverty in this region, as well. That poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination, which cut off generations from the opportunity of America. We have a duty to confront this poverty with bold action. So let us restore all that we have cherished from yesterday, and let us rise above the legacy of inequality. When the streets are rebuilt, there should be many new businesses, including minority-owned businesses, along those streets. When the houses are rebuilt, more families should own, not rent, those houses. When the regional economy revives, local people should be prepared for the jobs being created."

Well, I have as much faith in his current words about the economy as we had about the ironic words in Jackson Square (he is making sure that poverty-stricken African-Americans can no longer rent). And I'm sure that the country's crashing and burning economy is going to eventually affect our ability to get jobs here in New Orleans. Own up to your monumental failures as president, Dubya. The country is not better off than it was before you were president. If nothing else, the president's goal should be, "Help - don't hurt."

I always take pleasure in reading the Proust Questionnaire, but the introduction to Karl Rove's answers, where he is described as a "principal architect of the disastrous presidency of George W. They're talking about DJ Davis here:

Did you know? Davis is currently working as a script consultant for a new project being developed by David Simon, the award winning executive producer of HBO's The Wire. This project revolves around the lives of New Orleans musicians, including Davis, Donald Harrison, Kermit Ruffins and others. A pilot is tentatively scheduled to begin shooting in New Orleans in 2008. Davis also placed a song in the first episode of The Wire's final season, which aired in January 2008. How freaking cool is that?

I hope it airs on another network, because I don't get HBO!

That's being a New Orleanian wherever you are

For those New Orleanians thinking of voting for John McCain:

"After Bush made his disaster emergency declarations for Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama to free up federal funds, and got an update on Katrina from Brown, he flew Air Force One from Texas to Arizona, calling DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff en route to discuss illegal immigration-but not Katrina. Bush's staff also participated in a video teleconference on Katrina with state and federal officials. In the meantime, Katrina ripped two holes in the curved roof of the Superdome and let rain pour on thousands of evacuees inside. After Bush landed, he joined in a birthday cake photo op with Arizona Senator John McCain, which means, symbolically at least, that while New Orleans flooded, the president ate cake."*

And so did John McCain.

...there was no shortage of eureka moments glistening with discovery and surprise in the aftermath of Katrina. Poverty's grinding malevolence is fed in party by social choices and public policy decisions that directly impact how many people are poor and how long they remain that way. To acknowledge that is to own up to our role in the misery of the poor-be it the politicians we vote for who cut programs aimed at helping the economically vulnerable; the narrative of bootstrap individualism we invoke to deflect the relevance of the considerable benefits we've received while bitterly complaining of the few breaks the poor might get; the religious myths we circulate that bring shame on the poor by chiding them for lacking the appropriate hunger to be prosperous; and the resentment of the alleged pathology of poor blacks-fueled more by stereotypes than by empirical support-that gives us license to dismiss or demonize them.

I grew up going to church with Morris Dees, who is an honorable man, doing inspirational work. Please support the work of the Southern Poverty Law Center!

Here is the latest letter from Morris Dees:

Dear Friend,

Today we're releasing our annual "Year in Hate" issue of the Southern Poverty Law Center's quarterly magazine Intelligence Report and alerting the public that the number of hate groups operating in America has swelled by 48 percent since 2000 to a staggering 888.

This increase in hate activity is being fueled by the ugly rhetoric of demagogues who are using Latino immigrants as scapegoats for our country's problems. New FBI statistics suggest a 35 percent rise in hate crimes against Latinos between 2003 and 2006. Experts believe that such crimes are typically carried out by people who think they are attacking immigrants.

Mark Potok — editor of SPLC's Intelligence Report, and one of the harshest critics of Lou Dobbs and his anti-immigration rhetoric — says, "Hate groups continue to successfully exploit the immigration debate to their advantage, even though the immigration issue has largely disappeared from the presidential debate. The fact is that they've been aided and abetted by mainstream pundits and politicians who give these haters a platform for their propaganda."

It's no longer unusual to hear rancid propaganda about immigrants — even outright falsehoods — when we turn on our televisions or radios.

In the past three years, there have been some 300 anti-immigration groups founded; about half of these groups are listed by the SPLC as "nativist extremist" groups. We also list some of them as hate groups.

As you know, we not only track and expose the activities of hate groups in our country — we use innovative legal strategies to put them out of business. In fact, I'm now preparing for our upcoming trial against the Imperial Klans of America for the brutal beating of a teenage boy of Latino descent in Kentucky.

Thank you for standing with us in the fight against hate in all its forms and for being a part of our online community. You play a vital role in our daily work of exposing the activities of radical extremists and taking legal action against those who commit racial violence.

Sincerely,
Morris Dees

Organic farm tour

In case you didn't see Parade magazine yesterday, living on a farm increases your chances of living to age 100. I've always known this, since my Granny had a small farm of sorts, and I would have lived on it if I could. To me, there's nothing better than running around with the sheep, goats, horses, chickens, and other critters. I got to do that this weekend when my friend, Michelle, and I went up to Clinton, LA to tour an organic farm. This nice farmer, Paul Davidson, didn't know me from Adam when I found his name on a website listing organic farms in the area. I emailed him and asked if we could visit and see how his farm works. The lagniappe was that he also had baby sheep and goats being born this time of year. Why would you want to be anywhere else?

You can pick blueberries during June and July at Paul's farm. Please support this wonderful farmer, who is also working to save the Lousiana black bear: http://attra.ncat.org/sorg/la/profiles.html

Don Siegelman wrote me a letter

I sent Don Siegelman a package with a letter telling him about my involvement with his campaign over the years, how disillusioned I was when he was convicted, and how sorry I was that I doubted him and my own judgement about him. I included the picture I took of him back in 1990, one of the times he was running for governor. I received from him yesterday a photocopy of an article from the New York Times and he thanked me for my "uplifting words" and for the picture. I am sorry that I had any doubt that this is an outstanding person and a sincere one. I am positive that he will be released from jail soon; I just hope the people responsible for this travesty will eventually be held accountable.

FCC To Probe Alabama Station For Allegedly Censoring 60 Minutes
The Federal Communications Commission has begun investigating allegations that an Alabama television station censored the transmission of a recent 60 Minutes expose about the state’s imprisoned former Governor Don Siegelman. The station, WHNT in Huntsville, Alabama went black during most of the segment. The station claims there was an equipment failure. The 60 Minutes investigation examined how the Bush administration targeted Siegelman for political reasons. The FCC has taken action on cases of censorship in the past. The New York Times reports that in 1969, the F.C.C. revoked the license of WLBT in Jackson Mississippi after the commission established a systematic effort by the broadcaster to suppress information about the civil rights movement.
